Floyd Gurley spent over 50 years breeding the Kearny Whitehackle from the original strain of Michael Kearney, resulting in the winning Green Legged Kearny Whitehackles (Chesapeak) and the equally successful Yellow Legged Kearny Whitehackles. The Spangled Kearny Whitehackles were the last strain developed by Gurley. Steve Sturm is another modern breeder who has developed this bloodline. The Whitehackle is a 100% straight comb breed, with yellow-legged, green-legged (Chesapeak), and spangled cocks. It is still considered the most beautiful gamecock and was originally developed by Michael Kearney in 1871. Jesse Horta and Curt Langston are two breeders who have had success with the Whitehackle. Horta crossed the Kearny Whitehackle with Junior Belt’s Cowan Roundhead to create his White-Legged Sweater, while Langston chose to breed with Oriental fowl to create Whitehackle hybrid crosses that have won him multiple fights.
